Google AI Mode: An SEO Checklist for Law Firms (2026)

AI Mode has over 1 billion monthly users. Here is the 2026 SEO checklist for UK law firms: content, SRA rules, schema and measurement.

Google AI Mode: An SEO Checklist for Law Firms (2026)

Google AI Mode now has more than 1 billion monthly active users, according to Sundar Pichai’s Q2 2026 remarks. It reached UK searchers on 28 July 2025. For a law firm, that changes how a prospective client discovers your legal practice and whether they ever reach your website.

I wrote this checklist for UK law firms. It sits alongside our guide to AI SEO for law firms and the 2026 legal marketing playbook. Every item is something I check on a live law firm website.

The short answer for solicitors:
  1. Be the clearest source on each service. AI Mode splits a question into sub questions and cites pages that answer each part directly.
  2. Expect the highest scrutiny. Google treats legal advice as Your Money or Your Life content, so accuracy and credentials decide whether you are cited.
  3. Prove who wrote it. Named solicitors, SRA numbers and review dates carry more weight on legal topics than in almost any other sector.
  4. Measure visibility, not only clicks. Search Console now reports AI impressions, but not clicks or queries.

What is Google AI Mode and how many people use it?

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google. It answers a question in writing, with links to its sources, and lets the user keep asking follow up questions. Google now treats AI Overviews and AI Mode as one experience, so a single search can start with a summary and carry on as a conversation.

Figure What it shows Source

Google has not published a UK only usage figure. The behaviour data above comes from the US, so I treat it as direction rather than a UK benchmark.

How AI Mode reads a law firm website

Google says both AI Mode and AI Overviews may use query fan out. It breaks one question into several searches, runs them together and builds the answer from pages that resolve each part.

Let’s take “can I contest a will in England if I was left out” as an example. The query fan out covers time limits, eligibility under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, likely costs and local solicitors.

A law firm with one thin “Wills and probate” page answers none of those well. Solicitors with a clear page on each do, and they also prove topical depth.

Our generative engine optimisation guide covers the mechanics. The rest of this post covers what changes for solicitors.

What’s the difference between Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are a short AI summary that sits above the normal search results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience that replaces the list of results with a written answer and cited sources, built on a custom version of Gemini.

AI Overviews AI Mode What it means for a law firm
Where it appears Automatically, above the standard results In its own tab, opened by the user Your rankings still sit beneath an overview. There are no blue links in AI Mode.
Typical question Short and factual: “what is a lasting power of attorney” Long and multi step: “my mother has dementia and I am 62, how do I get an LPA and what does it cost” Write a short answer page for the first and a full scenario page for the second.
How it researches Can also use query fan out, then returns a short summary Uses query fan out, then builds a longer answer you can keep questioning Either way, cover every sub question: cost, time limits, eligibility, documents, local solicitors.
Sources shown Links alongside the summary A few cited sources first, the rest behind “Show all” Being one of the first few cited matters more than ranking tenth.
Local queries Standard local results Most likely to link to your Google Business Profile Keep your profile complete, current and consistent with your site.
Reporting Search Console shows AI features together, impressions only Same report, no split Use prompt tests and enquiry source questions to tell them apart.
What wins Clear, quotable answers on a trusted page The same, plus topic depth, entity authority, and brand mentions Named solicitors, SRA details and review dates on every page.

The line between the two is blurring. Pichai said in July 2026 that Google now treats AI Overviews and AI Mode as one experience, so I would plan for one integrated strategy rather than treating then as separate entities.

What the difference means for law firms

Citation and mentions matters more than position, because in both you are either cited and recommended or you are not.

Your Business Profile also does more work. For local queries AI Mode is most likely to link to it, so a solicitor with a thin or outdated profile loses the local citation first.

What does AI Mode mean for UK law firms?

AI Mode moves a client’s first contact from your homepage to an AI summary, in a sector where Google applies its strictest trust standards. Four shifts matter.

  • Fewer clicks: Pew Research found US users clicked a result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without (AI Overviews, March 2025).
  • Prospects ask AI first: Around 39% of UK adults would consider AI instead of a solicitor, and about one in six people with a legal problem consulted AI.
  • AI misses regulatory status: Blind Justice UK found AI chatbots directing clients to firms the SRA had fined or shut down, so state your SRA status and complaints route plainly.
  • Longer, local questions: AI Mode queries run about three times longer, so build structure pages with conversational headings and keep your Business Profile current, as in our guide to local SEO for law firms.

The law firms that gain are the ones whose pages are easy to quote and easy to verify. Our AI Discovery Report for law firms shows how law firms currently appear in AI answers.

The Google AI Mode checklist for law firms (2026)

Work through these in order. The first group decides whether Google can use your pages at all. The rest decide whether it chooses them.

  1. Access and technical foundations

Google can only quote what it can crawl, render and read.

    • Allow Googlebot and check snippet controls: a stray nosnippet or tight max-snippet directive limits what Google can quote, so check the live HTML, not just the CMS settings.
    • Serve key content as plain HTML: prices, FAQs and team details behind click tabs or late scripts are easy to miss.A well built law firm website delivers them in the first response.
    • Test structured data on the live page: performance and caching plugins can strip JSON-LD from the rendered HTML, so fetch the page as Google would.
    • Keep pages fast and stable on mobile: clients often start their search on a phone.
  2. One page per service, written to be quoted

Each service needs its own page, built to answer the client’s question directly.

    • One page per practice area and sub service: “divorce” and “financial settlement on divorce” are different fan out queries, and our guide to law firm content marketing shows how to structure the cluster.
    • Answer first: put a two sentence direct answer under each question heading, then add detail, as our answer engine optimisation guide explains.
    • Cover the sub questions: eligibility, time limits, cost, documents needed, timescales and what happens if it goes wrong.
    • Date the law: state the law as at a date, add a last reviewed date and update the page when legislation or practice changes.
  3. Authorship, entity and trust signals

Trust signals show Google and AI who is behind a page and that the law firm is real.

    • Name the solicitor: show author name, position, SRA number and a profile page with qualifications and notable cases.
    • Mark up the entity: use Organization, LegalService, Person, Article and FAQ schema across the website.
    • Same details everywhere: name, address, phone, SRA number and practice areas should match across your site, Business Profile, Law Society directory and legal directories.
    • Earn reviews: Client endorsements are a strong signal by LLMs to validate your service offering and help to increase brand mentions.
  4. Topic coverage and local signals

Cover every sub question a client asks, in the places they ask it.

    • Build topical depth: aim for at least 10-15 high quality and comprehensive pages for each practice area and blog pillar page.
    • Map each practice area to its fan out: list the five to ten sub questions a client asks and give each a section or page.
    • Build location pages with substance: local courts, local authority processes and key team members beat copy with the town name swapped in.
    • Keep your Business Profile current: categories, services, hours and posts all feed local results that AI Mode also uses.
  5. SRA transparency and accurate publicity

The SRA Transparency Rules turn price and service detail into content that AI systems can quote.

    • Publish price and service information: the SRA Transparency Rules cover services such as conveyancing, uncontested probate, employment tribunal claims, immigration (excluding asylum) and business debt recovery up to £100,000.
    • Say what the price includes: specify exactly what is covered, whether VAT applies, what is not included, typical timescales, key stages and who does the work.
    • Place it prominently: the SRA expects a prominent location on your site, and AI systems quote what is easy to find.
    • Keep publicity accurate: avoid outcome promises and unverifiable superlatives, because the SRA guidance reminds solicitors of their duty not to mislead consumers.
  6. Beyond text

AI Mode handles image and voice questions as well as typed ones, so your pages should not rely on text alone.

    • Add original images and short videos
    • Use clear process visuals
  7. Off site corroboration

Third party mentions back up what your website claims.

    • Get cited by trusted third parties: legal directories, professional bodies, local press and relevant trade publications all count.
    • Be consistent about expertise: if you claim to specialise in clinical negligence, your profile, reviews and mentions elsewhere should back this up.

How do you measure AI Mode visibility for a law firm?

You cannot measure AI traffic precisely, so track the signals around it. Google folds AI Mode clicks into the Search Console Performance report without separating them, and its newer Generative AI report shows impressions only. Many assistants also send no referrer, so their visits land in direct traffic.

These are the signals worth tracking:

  • Search Console: review the Performance and Generative AI reports monthly by page. Monitor the trends rather than the absolute number.
  • Branded search: a rise in searches for your law firm name after AI exposure is a useful signal.
  • Direct traffic: missing referrers push AI visits into direct, so watch for rising direct visits. For further insights, you can also filter direct traffic in the landing page report.
  • GA4 AI Assistant channel: monitor traffic volumes and conversions in the new ‘AI Assistant’ channel grouping.
  • Prompt tracking: run prompts around your key practice areas and location. Check monthly to see  whether you are cited, mentioned and described accurately.
  • Citations and mentions: use AI visibility software to monitor which pages AI answers cite, where your law firm is named without a link, and which competitors appear alongside you.
  • Enquiry source and call tracking: add “AI search or chatbot” to forms and call scripts, then tie each enquiry to a matter and a fee, which our live lead tracking platform does for every client.

Which AI Mode mistakes do law firms make most often?

Law firms lose AI Mode visibility through three common mistakes, and each one is fixable.

  • Content depth: the biggest mistake is thin and low quality content. A generic services page and outdated blog page give AI nothing specific or current to cite. Focus on building a page per practice area and sub service, add a named solicitor and a last reviewed date.
  • Technical: schema is often stripped from the live page by caching or performance plugins, so check the rendered HTML. Don’t chase exact AI rankings or judge success on clicks alone, as our SEO for lawyers guide explains.
  • Anonymous content: posts signed “Admin” or “The Team” fail the trust test on legal topics, so name the solicitor who wrote and reviewed each page.

What should your law firm do this month?

Fix the access and SRA basics first, then rebuild your top three practice area pages so each answers its sub questions directly under a named solicitor’s byline. Set up the Search Console AI report and a 20 prompt test so you have a baseline. That alone puts you ahead of most solicitors.
